E-FAST (Extended FAST)

E-FAST (Extended Focused Assessment with Sonography for Trauma) is a rapid bedside ultrasound exam used by healthcare providers to quickly check for internal bleeding or fluid in trauma patients. It extends the original FAST exam by including additional views of the chest to detect pneumothorax (collapsed lung). E-FAST helps assess for injuries such as bleeding in the abdomen, chest, or around the heart, guiding urgent treatment decisions without the need for immediate more invasive tests. It’s a valuable tool for early diagnosis in emergency situations, facilitating timely interventions and improved patient outcomes.
