Dutch Reach
The Dutch Reach is a safe parking method used when opening a car door. Instead of using the hand closest to the door (which can cause you to open it blindly), you use the hand on the opposite side. For example, if you’re on the driver's side, use your right hand to open the door. This naturally turns your body and encourages you to look behind for cyclists, pedestrians, or other vehicles before opening the door fully. It’s an effective way to prevent “dooring” accidents, where a cyclist or pedestrian is hit by an unexpectedly opened door.
