Dur-Sharrukin, also known as Khorsabad, was an ancient Assyrian city built in the 8th century BCE as the capital by King Sargon II. Located in modern Iraq, it was a grand city with impressive walls, palaces, and temples designed to showcase Assyria’s power and sophistication. The city was meticulously planned, featuring a central palace surrounded by defensive fortifications. After Sargon’s death, the city was abandoned, and its ruins were buried under the desert. Today, Dur-Sharrukin is an important archaeological site providing insight into Assyrian architecture, administration, and art.
