Duplex Theory
The Duplex Theory explains how our brain locates sounds using two main cues: Interaural Time Difference (ITD) and Interaural Level Difference (ILD). ITD is the tiny difference in the time a sound reaches each ear, helping us identify whether a sound is to our left or right. ILD involves differences in sound intensity between ears, especially for high-pitched sounds, further pinpointing the source. Our brain combines these cues to accurately determine the direction of sounds in our environment, enabling us to focus on specific sources and navigate safely.
