Duffy antigen

The Duffy antigen is a protein found on the surface of red blood cells. It plays a role in how certain malaria parasites, particularly Plasmodium vivax, invade these cells. Some people have a version of the Duffy antigen that is absent or altered, making it harder for the malaria parasite to infect their red blood cells. This variation provides a natural protective effect against certain types of malaria. The presence or absence of the Duffy antigen is also important in blood transfusions and medical testing, as it can affect compatibility and immune responses.
