Dubrovnik's ancient defences
Dubrovnik’s ancient defenses consisted of sturdy stone walls and towers built between the 12th and 17th centuries to protect the city from invaders. The walls form a nearly continuous barrier around Dubrovnik’s historic core, with thick battlements for soldiers to stand on and spot threats. Key features include the Fort Lovrijenac, defending the western land approach, and the Minčeta Tower, a formidable main gate. These structures were designed to withstand attacks and monitor sea and land threats, making Dubrovnik one of the best-preserved medieval fortifications in Europe. Today, the walls offer a panoramic view of the city and its history.
