DTs (Delirium Tremens)
Delirium Tremens (DTs) are severe symptoms that can occur in people who suddenly stop or reduce heavy alcohol consumption after prolonged heavy drinking. They typically develop within 48 to 96 hours and include confusion, hallucinations, body tremors, rapid heartbeat, high blood pressure, sweating, and agitation. DTs result from the brain's response to alcohol withdrawal, causing widespread neurological and autonomic instability. This condition can be life-threatening if not treated promptly, often requiring medical care, including medications to manage symptoms and prevent complications. Recognizing and addressing alcohol dependence early can help prevent DTs.
