Drug Recognition Experts (DREs) are specially trained law enforcement officers who evaluate individuals suspected of being impaired by drugs. They assess physical signs, behavior, and responses to various tests to identify specific drug categories, especially when standard tests like breathalyzers are inconclusive. DREs follow a structured, 12-step process to determine if a person is under the influence of drugs and which type. Their expertise helps ensure accurate enforcement and contributes to public safety by addressing drug-related impairments beyond alcohol detection.
