Dr. William Norwood

Dr. William Norwood was a pioneering American cardiac surgeon best known for developing the Norwood procedure in 1983. This life-saving surgery is used to treat a severe congenital heart defect called hypoplastic left heart syndrome, where parts of the heart are underdeveloped. The Norwood procedure reconstructs the heart’s anatomy to improve blood flow, enabling affected infants to survive the early critical period. His innovative work significantly improved survival rates and set the foundation for future treatments of complex heart conditions in newborns.
