Dr. Harold Ridley
Dr. Harold Ridley was a British ophthalmologist who pioneered the implantation of intraocular lenses to restore vision after cataract surgery. In the 1940s, he observed that some of his patients' eyes tolerated small, plastic fragments left in their eyes from World War II aircraft windshield shields without adverse reactions. Recognizing this, he developed the first intraocular lens made of clear plastic, which he successfully implanted in patients. His innovative work revolutionized cataract treatment, providing a permanent solution for vision restoration. Ridley's contributions laid the foundation for modern eye surgery and improved countless lives worldwide.
