Dr. Allan Paivio

Dr. Allan Paivio was a Canadian psychologist best known for developing the Dual Coding Theory. This theory suggests that our brains process and store information in two ways: visually (images, pictures) and verbally (words, language). By using both methods, learning and memory become more effective. For example, pairing a word with an image helps people remember information better than using just words or pictures alone. Paivio’s work has influenced educational strategies, enhancing teaching techniques by encouraging the use of visual aids and word associations to improve understanding and retention.
