Downdraft

A downdraft is a strong, downward current of air within a storm, such as a thunderstorm. It occurs when rain-cooled air sinks rapidly toward the ground, causing a gust of wind known as a downdraft. As this air hits the surface, it can spread out quickly and cause sudden, powerful winds, leading to damaging conditions like downed trees or structural damage. Downdrafts are an important part of storm dynamics, often associated with severe weather events, and can also contribute to the development of microbursts, which pose hazards to aircraft.
