downburst
A downburst is a sudden, powerful downdraft of air that descends sharply from a thunderstorm and hits the ground with great force. When this air crashes downward, it spreads out rapidly in all directions, creating extremely strong winds over a localized area. Downbursts can cause damage similar to a tornado but are typically more short-lived. They are dangerous to aircraft during takeoff and landing, as the sudden wind changes can destabilize flight. Downbursts often occur with heavy rain and are associated with severe thunderstorms, especially those with intense, rapidly descending rain or hail.
