Douglas Treaties
The Douglas Treaties were a series of agreements made between the Hudson’s Bay Company representatives, led by Governor James Douglas, and Indigenous nations in what is now British Columbia, Canada, between 1850 and 1854. Under these treaties, Indigenous peoples agreed to share their land for settlement and development in exchange for specific rights, such as hunting, fishing, and some additional protections. These treaties helped establish legal boundaries and relations between settlers and Indigenous communities, laying the groundwork for later treaties and land agreements in the region.
