Dopaminergic pathways
Dopaminergic pathways are networks in the brain that use dopamine, a neurotransmitter, to transmit signals. These pathways are involved in regulating mood, motivation, reward, and movement. The main pathways include the mesolimbic pathway (linked to pleasure and addiction), the nigrostriatal pathway (controlling movement), and the mesocortical pathway (affecting cognition and decision-making). Disruptions in these pathways can contribute to conditions like Parkinson’s disease, schizophrenia, and addiction. They are essential for experiencing motivation and reinforcing behaviors, helping us seek rewards and respond appropriately to our environment.
