Donor-recipient compatibility
Donor-recipient compatibility refers to how well a donor’s organ or tissue matches with the recipient’s body, reducing the risk of rejection. Factors include blood type, which must be compatible, and human leukocyte antigens (HLA), which are markers on cells that help identify self from foreign. A good match minimizes immune system attack and increases the chances of successful transplantation. Medical tests determine compatibility beforehand to ensure the best outcome. While some differences can be managed with medication, better compatibility generally leads to fewer complications and longer-lasting transplants.
