DOMS, or Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness, is the muscle pain and stiffness experienced 12 to 72 hours after unfamiliar or intense physical activity. It occurs because intense exercise causes microscopic damage to muscle fibers and triggers an inflammatory response as the body repairs the tissue. This process leads to soreness, reduced strength, and stiffness. DOMS is a normal part of adapting to new or increased exercise and typically improves within a few days. Proper rest, gentle stretching, and recovery techniques can help alleviate discomfort, but it's generally a sign that your muscles are adapting to the activity.
