domain walls
Domain walls are the boundaries that separate different regions, called domains, within a material where certain properties like magnetization or electric polarization are oriented differently. Think of them as the borders between neighboring neighborhoods that have distinct styles or colors. In magnetic materials, for example, the magnetic moments (tiny magnetic arrows) align in one direction within a domain, but point differently in an adjacent domain. The domain wall is where this change occurs. These walls are important because they influence the material’s magnetic and electrical behavior, with applications in data storage and electronic devices.
