DNA packaging

DNA packaging is the process by which long DNA molecules are compacted to fit inside a cell's nucleus. Think of DNA as a very long thread that needs to be tightly wound and organized. Proteins called histones help by wrapping the DNA around them, forming structures called nucleosomes. These nucleosomes further coil and fold, creating a compact structure that efficiently fits within the nucleus. Proper packaging not only saves space but also regulates gene activity, ensuring that the right genes are accessible or protected as needed. This intricate organization is essential for cell function and genetic inheritance.
