Dixiecrat Party

The Dixiecrat Party, officially called the States’ Rights Democratic Party, was a political group in the United States formed in 1948 by Southern Democrats. They opposed the Democratic Party’s civil rights initiatives and sought to maintain racial segregation and states’ authority over federal interventions. The Dixiecrats nominated Governor Strom Thurmond for president, advocating for policies favoring segregationist attitudes. Their emergence reflected deep regional and racial tensions within U.S. politics during that era. Although short-lived, the Dixiecrat Party significantly impacted the political landscape by highlighting divisions over civil rights and racial equality.
