Divorce, Dissolution and Separation Act 2020

The Divorce, Dissolution and Separation Act 2020 in the UK introduced reforms to simplify the legal process for ending marriages and civil partnerships. It removed the previous requirement to demonstrate fault or blame, such as adultery or unreasonable behavior. Instead, couples can now apply for a divorce after a minimum of 20 weeks from the start of proceedings, by simply stating that the marriage has broken down irretrievably. The Act aims to make the process more straightforward and less confrontational, encouraging amicable resolutions and focusing on the genuine end of the relationship.
