Ditlevsen’s Law

Ditlevsen’s Law is a statistical pattern observed in the sizes of earthquakes. It states that the frequency of earthquakes decreases exponentially as their magnitude increases. In other words, small earthquakes are very common, while very large ones are rare, but the relationship between their sizes and occurrence rates follows a consistent, predictable pattern. This law helps seismologists understand and model earthquake activity by quantifying how often different-sized earthquakes are likely to happen, aiding in risk assessment and preparedness planning.
