Distraction Osteogenesis
Distraction osteogenesis is a surgical technique used to gradually lengthen bones and improve the appearance or function of the skeletal structure. A surgeon creates a controlled fracture in the bone and attaches a device called an external or internal distractor. Over days or weeks, the device slowly pulls the bone apart at a consistent rate, prompting new bone to form in the gap through natural healing. This process allows for careful bone growth and helps correct deformities, limb length differences, or facial irregularities, resulting in improved alignment, function, and aesthetics.
