Dissociation Theory
Dissociation Theory suggests that when people experience extreme stress, trauma, or intense emotions, their mind can create a mental separation or "disconnect" from certain thoughts, feelings, memories, or surroundings. This process helps them cope with overwhelming situations by reducing emotional pain or confusion. Essentially, parts of their awareness operate independently, allowing them to function or survive despite distress. This phenomenon is often seen in cases of trauma or dissociative disorders, where individuals might feel detached from reality, themselves, or their memories, acting as a protective mechanism against psychological harm.
