Diptera
Diptera is an insect order that includes flies, mosquitoes, midges, and gnats. These insects are characterized by having a single pair of wings, with the second pair reduced to small structures called halteres that help with balance during flight. Diptera play key roles in ecosystems as pollinators, decomposers, and prey for other animals. Some members are also vectors for diseases, transmitting illnesses like malaria and dengue. Despite their often small size, they are incredibly diverse and important for environmental health and scientific research.
