Diphtheria toxin

Diphtheria toxin is a harmful protein produced by the bacteria *Corynebacterium diphtheriae*. When these bacteria infect a person, the toxin can damage tissues, especially in the respiratory system, leading to a thick, grayish membrane in the throat that can block airflow. The toxin also affects other parts of the body by disrupting protein production in cells, which can cause serious complications like heart and nerve damage. Vaccination is effective in preventing diphtheria by teaching the immune system to recognize and fight the bacteria before they produce harmful toxins.
