Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG)
Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG) is a highly aggressive brain tumor that develops in the pons, a part of the brainstem responsible for vital functions like breathing and movement. It primarily affects children and is difficult to treat because of its location and diffuse nature, meaning it spreads across a broad area. Symptoms often include balance issues, weakness, or difficulty swallowing. DIPG is usually diagnosed through imaging like MRI, as biopsy is risky. Despite research, current treatment options are limited, and the prognosis is poor, with most children surviving less than a year after diagnosis.
