Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act

The Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) of 1994 is a U.S. law that regulates dietary supplements, such as vitamins, minerals, and herbal products. It defines dietary supplements as products taken by mouth that contain dietary ingredients intended to supplement the diet. The act allows manufacturers to claim benefits of their products but prohibits them from making false or misleading claims. It also places the responsibility for product safety on the manufacturers, who do not need FDA approval before marketing their supplements, although the FDA can take action against unsafe products after they are on the market.
