Dieppe Raid

The Dieppe Raid, conducted on August 19, 1942, was an Allied military operation during World War II aimed at testing German defenses along France’s coast. It involved around 6,000 mainly Canadian troops attacking the port of Dieppe. The goal was to gather intelligence, evaluate tactics, and boost morale, while also disrupting German plans. However, the raid faced fierce German resistance, poor planning, and bad weather, leading to heavy casualties—over 900 killed and many captured. Although a military failure, it provided valuable lessons for future amphibious invasions, notably the Normandy landings in 1944.
