Diegetic music
Diegetic music refers to sounds or music that originate within the narrative world of a film or story, meaning the characters can hear it. For example, a character listening to a radio, playing an instrument, or singing are instances of diegetic music. It is distinguished from non-diegetic music, which is added for the audience’s experience, like background scores or soundtrack music that characters do not hear. Using diegetic music can create a more immersive and realistic atmosphere, highlighting particular moments or character traits by incorporating sounds directly into the storytelling environment.
