Didymos
Didymos is a binary asteroid system located near Earth, consisting of a larger primary asteroid about 780 meters (2,560 feet) across and a smaller moonlet called Dimorphos about 160 meters (525 feet) in diameter orbiting it. The system is of interest because its relatively close proximity allows scientists to study asteroid behavior and test planetary defense techniques. In 2022, NASA's DART mission intentionally collided with Dimorphos to see if such impacts can change an asteroid's path, demonstrating a potential method for deflecting future Earth-threatening asteroids.
