Diabetic Macular Edema (DME)
Diabetic Macular Edema (DME) is a condition that affects people with diabetes, where high blood sugar levels cause blood vessels in the retina (the light-sensitive part at the back of the eye) to leak fluid. This leakage leads to swelling in the macula, the central part of the retina responsible for sharp vision. The swelling distorts vision, making it blurry or wavy, and can impair both daytime and nighttime sight. DME is a common cause of vision loss in diabetics and requires prompt treatment to prevent further damage and preserve sight.
