developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH)
Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is a condition where a baby’s hip joint doesn’t form properly, resulting in a loose connection or a dislocated hip. This occurs when the socket (acetabulum) is shallow or the ball (femoral head) isn’t held securely in place. It can develop during fetal growth or early infancy and may cause hip instability, uneven leg lengths, or walking difficulties if untreated. Early detection and treatment, such as bracing or surgery, can usually lead to normal hip development and prevent long-term problems.
