Devadasi System

The Devadasi system is a traditional practice in parts of India where young girls are dedicated to a temple deity, often through a religious ceremony. Historically, Devadasis served as temple dancers and caretakers of sacred rituals, gaining certain social and economic privileges. However, over time, the system has been associated with exploitation, including forced prostitution and trafficking, leading to social stigma and vulnerability for those involved. Modern efforts aim to eradicate exploitative practices, restore dignity, and provide education and alternative livelihoods to women and girls formerly part of this system.
