Despotate of Epirus

The Despotate of Epirus was a medieval Greek state that emerged in the 13th century after the fall of the Byzantine Empire to the Fourth Crusade. Centered in the region of Epirus in northwestern Greece, it was ruled by a despote (a title similar to prince) and played a crucial role in preserving Greek culture and Orthodox Christianity during a time of significant foreign invasions and influences. The Despotate maintained a degree of autonomy and power until it was eventually conquered by the Ottomans in the 15th century. It is noted for its contributions to art, architecture, and scholarship.
