Desmond Tutu (Archbishop)
Desmond Tutu (1931-2021) was a South African Anglican bishop and social rights activist, best known for his leadership in the fight against apartheid, a system of racial segregation in South Africa. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984 for his nonviolent struggle for justice. Tutu advocated for compassion and reconciliation, emphasizing forgiveness over vengeance. After apartheid ended, he chaired the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, which aimed to heal the nation by uncovering past atrocities. Tutu was also a vocal advocate for human rights globally, promoting peace, equality, and the dignity of all individuals.
