Desmond Rebellions
The Desmond Rebellions were two major uprisings in Ireland during the late 16th century, involving the Gaelic clan of Desmond in Munster. The rebellions, occurring in 1569-1573 and 1579-1583, were driven by resistance to English attempts to control and anglicize Ireland, as well as local grievances. The Gaelic Irish and Old English allies fought against English forces seeking to impose loyalty, land redistribution, and Protestantism. Although briefly successful, the rebellions were ultimately suppressed, leading to severe punishments and the confiscation of land, strengthening English dominance in Ireland.
