Desertion

Desertion refers to the act of abandoning a military or employment position without permission or intent to return, especially during a time of duty or service. In a military context, it typically involves a service member leaving their post without authorization and not returning, which can be considered a serious offense. Desertion can undermine discipline and operational effectiveness, and is usually subject to legal consequences. It’s different from being absent without leave (AWOL), as desertion implies an intent to permanently abandon the role rather than a temporary absence.
