Desert habitats

Desert habitats are ecosystems characterized by low rainfall, typically less than 10 inches annually. They can be hot, like the Sahara, or cold, like the Arctic tundra, but both share dry conditions. Plants and animals in deserts have adapted to survive with limited water—such as cacti storing water and animals being active mostly during cooler periods. These habitats often feature extreme temperatures, sparse vegetation, and specialized species that thrive despite harsh conditions. Deserts play vital roles in their environments, supporting unique biodiversity despite their seemingly barren landscapes.
