Descent stage
The descent stage is the part of a lunar lander or spacecraft designed to safely descend from orbital altitude to the lunar surface. It contains engines and equipment to control descent speed and enable a soft landing. During descent, it manages braking and guiding the craft to a specific landing site. Once landed, the descent stage may remain on the surface or be jettisoned. Its primary purpose is to ensure the spacecraft touches down safely and accurately, providing a stable platform for astronauts or scientific instruments to operate on the Moon.
