DES (Drug-Eluting Stent)

A Drug-Eluting Stent (DES) is a tiny, mesh-like tube placed into narrowed or blocked coronary arteries during a procedure called angioplasty. It is coated with medication that slowly releases to prevent the artery from becoming blocked again by scar tissue or new plaque growth. The stent physically holds the artery open, restoring blood flow to the heart muscle, while the drug helps reduce the chance of future blockages. DESs are commonly used in treating coronary artery disease to improve long-term outcomes and reduce the need for additional procedures.
