Derryberry's Rules
Derryberry’s Rules, developed by Ernest Derryberry, describe how the natural frequency of a horse's hoof impacts its sound and comfort. They suggest that when a horse's hoof strikes the ground, its responsiveness depends on the relationship between the hoof's natural vibration (resonance) and the force of the impact. If the hoof resonates too much or too little, it can cause discomfort or noise. Proper trimming and shoeing aim to adjust the hoof’s natural frequency to optimize sound, reduce stress, and improve the horse’s comfort. Essentially, these rules guide hoof care to balance sound and health through vibration management.
