derecho
A derecho is a widespread, fast-moving band of thunderstorms that produce damaging straight-line winds across a large area, often exceeding 70 miles wide and lasting several hours. These storms form along a line or cluster, driven by intense wind patterns and temperature differences in the atmosphere. Unlike tornadoes, the damage from a derecho comes primarily from straight-line winds that can knock down trees, power lines, and structures. Derechos can cause extensive, long-lasting power outages and damage over hundreds of miles, and they are most common in the central and eastern United States during the summer months.
