Deictic Expressions

Deictic expressions are words or phrases that rely on the context to convey meaning. They point to something specific in the situation, such as "here," "there," "you," "me," or "today." Their meaning depends on who is speaking, where they are, and when the conversation occurs. For example, "I" refers to the speaker, and "this" points to something nearby. Without the context, these terms can be ambiguous. Deictic expressions help speakers coordinate understanding by referencing elements in their shared environment or situation.
