Deglutition

Deglutition, or swallowing, is the complex process by which food or liquid moves from your mouth to your stomach. It involves coordinated actions of your tongue, throat muscles, and the nervous system. First, the tongue pushes the food to the back of the mouth; then, the airway temporarily closes to prevent choking, and the muscles in the throat and esophagus work together to propel the substance downward. This smooth coordination ensures safe and efficient transfer of food, allowing you to eat and drink comfortably. Swallowing happens automatically but can also be consciously controlled.
