Defense Mechanism Theory
Defense Mechanism Theory explains how our mind unconsciously protects us from anxiety or uncomfortable feelings. When faced with stress or emotional conflict, our brain may use certain strategies—called defense mechanisms—to shield us from pain or distress, often by distorting reality or avoiding the issue. Examples include denial, repression, or projection. These mechanisms are automatic and help us cope temporarily, but overuse can prevent us from addressing problems effectively. Understanding these defenses can lead to better self-awareness and healthier emotional responses.
