Deep Space One
Deep Space One (DS1) was NASA’s first spacecraft to test new technology in space, launched in 1998. It served as a pioneer for innovations like ion propulsion, which uses electric fields for efficient, continuous thrust—allowing spacecraft to travel farther with less fuel. DS1 also demonstrated advanced autonomous navigation and conducted flybys of a comet and an asteroid, gathering valuable scientific data. Its success helped prove these technologies for future missions, paving the way for more efficient, long-duration exploration of the Solar System and beyond.
