Deep Sea Drilling Project

The Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) was a pioneering scientific program initiated in 1968 to explore the Earth's deep ocean floors. Using specialized drilling ships, scientists extracted core samples from beneath the seafloor to study the geology, oceanography, and history of Earth's crust. This project helped scientists understand plate tectonics, the formation of ocean basins, and Earth's past climate changes. Operating for over two decades, DSDP significantly advanced our knowledge of deep-sea environments and Earth's geological processes, laying the groundwork for subsequent ocean drilling programs.
