Deed Fraud
Deed fraud occurs when someone unlawfully records a fake or altered ownership document—called a deed—claiming ownership of a property they do not own. This often involves identity theft or manipulating official records to transfer property without the rightful owner’s consent. The goal is to gain control or financial benefit from the property illegally. Victims may discover the fraud only after attempting to sell or refinance their property. Legal action is usually needed to prove ownership and clear the title, which can be complex and time-consuming.
