Decretum Gratiani

Decretum Gratiani, created by the monk Gratian in the 12th century, is a foundational text of canon law in the Catholic Church. It systematically compiled and organized various church laws, teachings, and practices from scripture, church fathers, and previous church decrees. This work aimed to resolve discrepancies and provide clarity on legal and moral matters within the Church. Often referred to as the "Concordia Discordantium Canonum," it set the stage for the development of canon law and influenced the legal systems of many Christian denominations and even civil law traditions.
